Historian found no further log of her in historic archives. In 1501, she made a trading voyage to the Pearl Coast on the island of Cubagua, Venezuela. She was lying in wait at Santo Domingoin 1500. In 1498, she returned to Hispaniola as advance guard of Columbus’ Third Voyage. She was the only ship to survive the 1495 hurricane, returning quickly to Spain in 1496. In September 1493, Niña joined a grand fleet of 17 ships for the second voyage to Hispaniola, becoming the flagship for an exploration of Cuba. On the first voyage to America, the crew of Niña slept on the deck but adopted the use of hammocks after seeing Native Americans utilizing them. This indicate a medium-sized caravel of around 50 feet (15 m) in length on deck. Although Michele de Cuneo, who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage, mentioned that Niña was “about 60 toneladas” (60 tons). There is no authentic documentation on the specifics of Niña’s design. It was later rebuilt for use by Christopher Columbus.Ĭhristopher Columbus Ships – The Niña (real name Santa Clara) They believed that it was built in Spain in the year 1441. The historian dispute the origin of the ship. The crew size was 26 men under Captain Martín Alonso Pinzón. The ship weighed approximately 60 tons with an estimated deck length of 17 meters (56 ft) and a width of 5.36 meters (17.6 ft). La Pinta was square rigged and smaller than Santa María. Later Columbus used the timbers to build a fort which Columbus called La Navidad (Christmas) because the wreck occurred on Christmas Day. Later realizing that the ship was beyond repair, Columbus ordered his men to strip the timbers from the ship. The ship ran aground off the present-day site of Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. With the boy at the helm, the currents carried the ship onto a sandbank. The night being calm, the steersman also decided to sleep, leaving only a cabin boy to steer the ship, a practice which the admiral had always strictly forbidden. Later on 24 December (1492), not having slept for two days, Columbus decided at 11:00 p.m. Santa María was probably a medium-sized carrack, about 58 ft (17.7 m) long on deck.
